What the hell has Bridget Jones to do with in your face feminism?
Maybe this question is right now in your mind. A logical question. Here are the reasons why we think about Bridget Jones .
We have an very exciting seminar at the universtity called “Aktivismus, Medien und Do-It-Yourself Kultur im Third Wave Feminism” and there we have a presentation about Chick Literature where we make our focus on Bridget Jones. We are very happy to do it.
Right now we are in the middle of our reseach.
Here is just a short overview for you.
We think that in the Bridget Jones`s Diary are a lot of elements from :
“Pride and Prejudice” (which is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of early 19th-century England. For more informations Pride_and_Prejudice ) -> we think you can see this in Bridgets attitude her self-conscoiusness for example, as well as you can see that both mothers, Mrs Bennet and Mrs Jones want to find a husband for their daughter. Which is remarkable when you think that the books play in different centuries!
Second Wave Feminism (because Bridget Jones has free access and equal opportunity to the work. She also has a degree from Bangor which really exists www.bangor.ac.uk) but also elements from Antifeminism (because in the book there are always the idea of traditional gender arrangements and on page 30 Bridget Jones even say: “Finally there isn`t anything more uncomely for a man than screaming feminism.”
In the end we came to the conclusion that the character of Bridget Jones is different than in the very popular movie. She is just on the way to find herself between Second Wave Feminism and Antifeminism. She is somewhere in the middle.
Unfortunately we can`t give you more about it but we hope we’ll post it in the next days. You can read the book in the mean time.
Here we can just give you an impression of the “Movie Bridget Jones”. Make your own opinion of it. Do you think she is really a Independet Woman? Tell us your opinion about it
If this is not enough. Here is a another link about Bridget Jones. We hope it entertains you. Its “All by myself”. In our point of view the “Movie Bridget” seems to look a kind of sad. Don`t you think?
We also found a video of Bridget interviewing Colin Firth. As you can see in the video Reneè Zellweger acts like Bridget and it’s really funny! Sadly they didn’t put it in the movie.
In addition to it we found an interview of Helen Fielding the author of “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and it’s actually good, she has a few good points. You should take a look especially on her answer to her favourite charakter in the book that was surpising for us. (http://bridgetarchive.altervista.org/fielding_Q&A.htm)
As you hopefully read we have the opinion that “Pride and Prejudice” and “The Brigdet Jones`s Diary” have a lot in common. We found also an interesting interview which combines these factors. Helen Fielding chating about Mr. Darcy. Awesome!
